Did anyone watch? This is the 1 of the 2 horse races I try to watch, and I caught the tail end and this was tragically sad! I am still crying over the loss
of the gorgeous animal!

They are taking about it all over the news...It is sad that they do that... why can't they set the bones and make them a pet somewhere? That is why I feel
for these animals... They make me feel like they did bad in a fight (pitbulls like) and get killed because they lost....
That is one reason I don't watch it... They told us before the start of the NASCAR race that Big Brown won, but I don't watch the derby...It is so sad... |

Well Bren, from working with veterianarians and horses, one leg can be set and managed sucessfully for a time, but this horse broke both front legs. Even if
she had only broke 1 leg, she may have only had a few months before she'd have to be put down because of arthritis pain, ans lameness. There is no way to
set both, she wouldn't be able to walk, or stand and for a horse to stay in a down position is catastrophic! This means the horse will die a slow
aganizing death from clolic..which by the way you prevent by walking the horse once you get her up, and surgery . The ony humane thing to do was to put the
horse down. It is sad but it is also a reality for horse lovers everywhere.

Flo- thanks for the great explanation- many folks don't understand why such magnificent animals have to be put down. Horses, for all their beauty and
strength, can be very fragile. It is always heartbreaking.

Yeah I know about that... but with dogs they have those things that help them stay up .. and I always wondered why they couldn't do that... I had a friend
that owned horses and knew they have to be able to stand and can't stay down for long...I spent many a night with her when they had to stay with a horse or
two when they are ill...

Bren if the horse has one broken leg they can use those things...but not with two. too long to recuperate and too much weight to be held.
my sister showed arabians...and i am familiar with the trials and tribulations of such....its sad to see such a beautiful animal put down. |

I am just thankful the animal did not suffer long. It is sad that it had to happen, but.

I watched the race and actually placed a bet on Eight Belles, but did not cash in the ticket. I bawled my eyes out it was so sad. I used to work at a
casino/horse race track and that was one thing I could not handle was when they had to put the poor things down. I always told myself they were in a better
place and did not have to go through some of the crap some of those poor animals endure.
